One, the car is built on the principle of cutting weight where possible. Second, the car has a rear-mount battery that is mounted (technically) in the passenger cabin. I bought this battery under the mistaken assumption that the OEM battery was about 39 lbs and I would be saving more weight than I actually ended up saving. After removing the OEM battery I weighed it at 33 lbs. Doing some research on other that use this (or the 15 lbs version) I decided that being mounted in the cabin doesn't seem to cause any problems. It is a sealed battery and my understanding is that the only way it can leak fumes into the passenger area is under heavy charging and even that is unlikely. I do use only the trickle-charge feature on my charger when charging this battery. I do not have aftermarket sound system or other electronics other than a radar detector. There was some debate about this battery being strong enough to crank the motor, because of the amp counts reading lower on this battery. So far - it's worked quite well. The longest I've let the car sit has been 5 days though; and after that stale period it did crank the motor, albeit a bit slow. Once the cold returns I will need to put it on a tender, because the cold cranking amps might not be enough, and I suspect that with the vehicle's lighter use during the winter the battery could go flat. Overall, I think this battery is a great product. I ordered up the aluminum mount to go with it and that is also a beautiful piece. Even the terminal hardware is very nicely machined and nice to look at and hold. This battery is definitely experimental in this application, but so far so good. |
